TAMARAC COLLECTS 10 TONS OF FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY
May 12, 2008

Residents from the City of Tamarac donated a total of ten tons of food to local
food banks this past Saturday during the National Association of Letter
Carrier’s annual food drive.
More than a dozen volunteers, coordinated by David Rubin from The Cooperative
Feeding Program, flooded the docking bay behind the Tamarac post office
unloading the bags of food left by Tamarac residents in their mail boxes and
collected by the letter carriers. Each bag of food was opened and sorted into
cans, dry foods and glass containers and then packaged into strong boxes before
being stacked onto pallets and loaded into a postal service trailer for delivery
to local food banks.
“It is great to see how the people of Tamarac have once again stepped up to the
plate to help their neighbors who are hungry,” commented Bruce Harris from The
Pantry of Broward, a new agency serving the elderly poor and grandparents taking
care of grandchildren in Broward County. Harris, his wife and teenage son all
helped sort and carry the heavy boxes on a hot and steamy Saturday afternoon.
“Despite the current economic challenges, it is refreshing to see how everyone
still shares what they have for the common good,” surmised Harris who explained
that one in 12 grandparents in Broward County are the primary caregivers for
their grandchildren and who are served by The Pantry of Broward.
