The thirteen Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Broward County are collecting cans of
food throughout the summer to benefit Broward County seniors in need.
This effort by thousands of children who benefit from the Boys & Girls Clubs
will provide a much needed food supply for The Pantry of Broward, a new
social service agency located at 610 NW 3rd Ave in Fort Lauderdale.

Founded by philanthropist Elizabeth “BJ” Buntrock, The Pantry of Broward
serves seniors in need with fixed incomes of less than $700 per month and
grandparents who are taking care of their grandchildren. Florida has the largest
percentage of seniors per capita in the nation and more than 30,000 seniors in
Broward County alone are estimated to be living below the poverty line.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America was founded in 1860 in Connecticut to give
local boys a positive alternative to the streets. Over the years the Connecticut
Club turned into a national movement, reaching a membership of over four million
boys and girls, making it one of the largest youth serving agencies in the
United States.
“We are so pleased that the young people are reaching out to help the many
seniors in need,” commented Peggy Loughan, CEO of The Pantry of Broward. “This
effort brings hope to both the giver and the receiver.”
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County joined the national organization in
1965 and boasts a membership of over 13,000 youth, making it one of the largest
Boys & Girls Club organizations in the nation. The agency hopes to raise
half-a-ton of food for The Pantry of Broward.
