FINAL PUSH TO HELP SENIORS CLAIM TAX STIMULUS PAYMENT
August 18, 2008

Two of Broward County's lead agencies in caring for seniors are making a concerted final effort to help thousands of seniors access millions of dollars in unclaimed tax stimulus payments that will expire on October 15th.

The Pantry of Broward and Meals on Wheels are collaborating in distributing thousands of flyers to seniors who are shut-ins throughout Broward County to advise them of the tax rebate there for the asking. The fliers are distributed by Meals on Wheels volunteers who daily deliver a hot meal to seniors unable to get out of their homes.

The seniors can then call The Pantry of Broward who will prepare the 1040A tax form and mail it to the senior for their signature, also enclosing a stamped envelope addressed to the appropriate IRS office. The shut-in simply places the signed and completed form in the envelope and mails it.

"We have completed and mailed dozens of tax forms to seniors who just discovered they were eligible for a $300 rebate through the flyers The Pantry of Broward has distributed thanks to the collaboration with Meals on Wheels," explained Penny Loughan, CEO of The Pantry of Broward. "This is free money for the people who most need it."

Many seniors on social security who have not filed taxes erroneously think they are ineligible for the Federal Economic Stimulus Payment which provides for a $300 rebate for eligible singles and up to $600 for couples. Anyone who has received at least $3,000 in social security benefits, veteran's benefits or earned income in 2007 could be eligible for the stimulus payment.

The Pantry of Broward serves seniors in need living on fixed incomes and grandparents who care for their grandchildren. Broward Meals on Wheels delivers prepared meals to more than 3,000 people in need who are unable to leave their homes.

Any senior who has not yet applied for their tax stimulus payment is invited to call The Pantry of Broward at (954) 358-1481 for assistance in their filing. There is no charge for this service.
