South Florida Students Decorate and Deliver Food Boxes to Seniors

August 10, 2009

On a Monday morning, two weeks before school starts, many children are still enjoying the final lazy days of summer or fun activities of summer camp but this Monday morning, about a dozen children gave up their video games and playground time in order to help others.

The children -- who ranged in age from 7 to 17 -- grabbed their markers and crayons in order to add a little color to the boxes of food delivered by The Pantry of Broward. The Pantry of Broward collects and distributes food to seniors in need on low fixed incomes and grandparents raising grandchildren.

BankAtlantic Volunteer's Team Up With the Pantry of Broward, Inc. To Support Broward County Seniors

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. – August 19, 2009 –

Volunteers from BankAtlantic joined the efforts of The Pantry of Broward by unpacking and sorting donated boxes of food. BankAtlantic volunteers also helped pack food boxes to be distributed to The Pantry's elderly seniors and grandparents in our community.

"Many seniors in Broward County are on fixed income of less than $800 per month and have to make an impossible choice between buying food or medicine," commented Jarett Levan, CEO of BankAtlantic. "The Pantry of Broward provides food and support services to seniors in need, on low incomes, and to grandparents raising grandchildren. We are very pleased that BankAtlantic volunteers are making a concerted effort to support both the seniors and children of our community," he added.

"The Pantry of Broward strives to be a one-stop shop for seniors in need," said Penny Loughan, CEO of The Pantry of Broward. "In addition to providing much needed food, we also try to give seniors food for their soul in the sense of trying to help alleviate some of the bigger issues that are affecting their well-being in the autumn of their lives. New clients meet with a Pantry of Broward case manager to help smooth out other issues they may be struggling with such as problems with Social Security, food stamps, dental care, eye care, learning how to use debit cards, computers, and even hairstyling, " concluded Loughan.

"Thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to help at The Pantry of Broward yesterday. You do a great job and we had a wonderful time. Below are the pictures we took."

Best regards,

Yvonne

ACCIDENTAL FRIENDS by BJ Buntrock

August 4th, 2009

It was just another typical day. I was leaving Flowers and Found Objects, to go back to The Pantry of Broward. I was parked in the Suntrust Bank lot next to my flower shop. I really wasn't paying proper attention; I was backing out of the parking lot, and then, crash. I had backed into the side of a shinny pristine black SUV. Of course I got out immediately to survey the damage. It didn't look that awful to me, but the driver was still in his vehicle. Boy was he mad when he got out! I tried to calm him down but he kept ranting and raving. Then Jim Algood, a guard at the bank, came out, put his arm around me and said "Honey, what happened?" When I told him the story, he suggested we all go into the flower shop to exchange information, which we did. I recommended to the handsome driver, Monroe Zalkin that he might want to take his vehicle to Matt at Unique Auto Body, just down Andrews, and get an estimate of the damages. And, so he did.

As it turns out Matt and Monroe started talking one day and Matt sung my praises. He told Monroe all about The Pantry of Broward and all the good work being done to serve seniors and grandparents. I contacted Monroe later that week to see if his car was repaired, and in the course of our conversation, he inquired about The Pantry. Monroe was very interested in our work, so he came to The Pantry's grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony.

Ever since we met, Monroe has been a great supporter of The Pantry. He is one of our C-Noters, donating $100 per month. He, Penny Loughan and I have lunch together frequently. It just shows that you never know who you will come in "contact" with throughout your life. And as we reflect on our one year anniversary we are grateful for all our friends, including the ones we found by accident!

BACK TO SCHOOL AND IN NEED OF UNIFORMS

The kids are back in school, but the grandchildren we serve are in need of school uniforms. Can you please help our grandkids by giving us gift cards to Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, or JC Penny. Let’s make sure that these children have the basic needs to go to school, to fit in with all the other kids, and to focus on their studies. You can mail the gift cards to The Pantry of Broward, 610 NW Third Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311 or drop them by our office.

Thank you for your help.
